About Course
Balkhi, Mowlana Jalaluddin popularly known as Rumi in the West, is one of the greatest mystics and most influential thinkers of the world. Rumi's works are replete with profound experiences, brilliant and pure insights and valuable teachings for living a purposeful life. However adequate understanding of Rumi’s thought demands a good grasp of the key concepts in his worldview. This course attempts to provide this possibility and make students more familiar with the fundamentals of Rumi’s thought through a direct study of his works, especially the Mathnawi.
The main themes discussed in this course will be as follows :
Unity, Love, self annihilation (voluntary death), intuition and knowledge, the religious law (Shari’ah), the Way (Tariqat) and the Truth (Haqiqat), the development of internal senses, religion, faith, infidelity and the diversity of religions.

About the Instructor
Dr. Amir Akrami holds a PhD in Philosophy of Religion from McGill University, Canada and the Iranian Institute of Philosophy. He has taught at Yale, Eastern Mennonite and James Madison Universities in the United State of America, the Al-Mahdi Institute, Birmingham, and the University of Birmingham, UK, Faculty of Theology at the University of Tehran and the Iranian Institute of Philosophy. Dr Akrami is presently on the Faculty of the Iranian Research Institute for Humanities and Cultural Studies.
